From navigating the challenges of a transitioning economy to pioneering initiatives in green financing and women’s empowerment, her story reflects the power of resilience, adaptability, and strategic thinking. Jovanka emphasized the importance of diversity in leadership, mentorship, and creating opportunities for others, while candidly addressing the balancing act between personal and professional responsibilities.
Her experiences serve as an inspiration for aspiring leaders and a testament to the value of innovation, collaboration, and integrity in driving meaningful change. Here’s a glimpse into her inspiring story.
From Beginnings to Leadership Roles
Jovanka Joleska Popovska has built an impressive career by embracing challenges and seizing opportunities. Her journey began in the 1990s, a period marked by significant social and economic changes. A turning point came when she transitioned into auditing, starting at a local firm and later joining KPMG as one of its first employees in North Macedonia. During her six years there, she honed her technical expertise, leadership abilities, and project management skills, which set the stage for her next major move: joining ProCredit Bank in 2003.
Over the years, Jovanka has cultivated a leadership style grounded in trust, transparency, and team empowerment. She firmly believes that “a successful leader doesn’t centralize power but builds teams capable of independent decision-making and innovation.” Her philosophy underscores that leaders must be approachable, open to feedback, and willing to admit mistakes.
“From managing small teams at KPMG to leading an organization of over 800 employees, I’ve learned that delegation is not just about efficiency—it’s about empowering people to grow and succeed.”
From navigating the challenges of a transitioning economy to pioneering initiatives in green financing and women’s empowerment
“The period of significant economic transition in the Adriatic region shaped my development. It was a time when families struggled, and the ultimate goal became finding a job to support them rather than pursuing personal career aspirations”, said Joleska Popovska.
As she said, joining a startup bank was not only a challenge but an adventure. The desire to create something tangible from scratch drove her decision, giving her a sense of fulfilment.
The Impact of Leadership
Jovanka is a passionate advocate for gender equality in business, firmly believing that “women bring unique perspectives to decision-making and leadership.” Her own experience has shown that diversity in leadership not only enhances business outcomes but also inspires future generations of women to aspire to leadership roles.
“Empowering people was key for me. As a leader, your greatness is measured by the number of empowered individuals who thrive under your guidance, not by managing mediocrity.”
Talking about corporate boards, she has highlighted why it is important to have diverse boards. “A diverse board adds value through different perspectives. While merit is paramount, diversity amplifies decision-making effectiveness and fosters better institutional performance.”
Mentorship and organisational culture
Mentorship is about more than guidance; it’s about creating an environment where vulnerability is acceptable, mistakes are stepping stones, and opportunities are given freely to all based on merit, said Joleska Popovska.
Corporate culture is pivotal. An institution must enable individuals to interact horizontally and vertically, fostering opportunities for visibility and growth beyond hierarchical constraints. As she said, “Mistakes are inevitable, but admitting them and learning from them reflects true leadership. To prevent repetition, we implemented brainstorming sessions where we collectively project ideas, ensuring everyone is part of the process”.
“For women aspiring to leadership in industries where opportunities are network-driven, platforms like Women on Boards Adria are vital. They enhance visibility, create networking opportunities, and promote inclusivity.”
A Message to Young Professionals
To those just starting their careers, Jovanka shares a straightforward message: “Work hard, learn from your mistakes, and don’t shy away from challenges.”
