Career Development and Leadership: Perspectives from Jovanka Joleska Popovska

As part of our “In Conversation With…” webinar series for Women on Boards members, we had the privilege of speaking with Jovanka Joleska Popovska, Member of the Supervisory Board of ProCredit Bank, North Macedonia, and a WOBA Ambassador.

Jovanka’s journey is a testament to professional growth, resilience, and staying true to one’s values. She has shared insights from her remarkable journey of leadership and perseverance. From navigating the challenges of a transitioning economy to pioneering initiatives in green financing and women’s empowerment, her story reflects the power of resilience, adaptability, and strategic thinking. Jovanka emphasized the importance of diversity in leadership, mentorship, and creating opportunities for others, while candidly addressing the balancing act between personal and professional responsibilities.

Her experiences serve as an inspiration for aspiring leaders and a testament to the value of innovation, collaboration, and integrity in driving meaningful change. Here’s a glimpse into her inspiring story.

From Beginnings to Leadership Roles

Jovanka Joleska Popovska has built an impressive career by embracing challenges and seizing opportunities. Her journey began in the 1990s, a period marked by significant social and economic changes. A turning point came when she transitioned into auditing, starting at a local firm and later joining KPMG as one of its first employees in North Macedonia. During her six years there, she honed her technical expertise, leadership abilities, and project management skills, which set the stage for her next major move: joining ProCredit Bank in 2003.

As she said, joining a startup bank was not only a challenge but an adventure. The desire to create something tangible from scratch drove her decision, giving her a sense of fulfilment.

    The Impact of Leadership

Mentorship is about more than guidance; it’s about creating an environment where vulnerability is acceptable, mistakes are stepping stones, and opportunities are given freely to all based on merit, said Joleska Popovska.

    A Message to Young Professionals

To those just starting their careers, Jovanka shares a straightforward message: “Work hard, learn from your mistakes, and don’t shy away from challenges.”
